The Value of Copyright
The ability to determine the value of intellectual property is important from the perspectives of both business growth and securing financing. However, in Finland, companies have only rarely identified all of their intangible assets, and the tools for determining the value of copyright assets are insufficient.
The research project’s purpose is to form an overall picture of the current state of determining the value of copyright assets in Finland and to identify gaps in the knowledge base. In addition, it aims to benchmark practices for valuing copyright in different countries and internationally, and to assess their suitability for Finland.
Through stakeholder engagement and a workshop, the project initiates discussion on defining the value of copyright assets in Finland. The aim is to increase understanding of how companies determine the value of copyright assets and thus improve companies’ ability to manage and utilize their intangible assets.
The project supports the implementation of both the National Intellectual Property Strategy (2022) and the Growth Strategy for the Creative Economy (2025). It also responds to the objectives of Prime Minister Petteri Orpo’s government programme to create a functional business environment for Finnish innovation and creative industries, as well as to the goals outlined in the Cultural Policy Report (2024) to develop, in cooperation with stakeholders, principles for valuing copyright and intellectual capital, and to enhance dialogue between companies in the sector and financiers.
